CINCINNATI, Ohio (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF baseball team fell to Cincinnati 8-5 at Marge Schott Stadium Sunday. Despite dropping the finale, the Knights claimed the series victory 2-1 after wins on Friday and Saturday.
The Bearcats came out determined in the first two innings, posting four runs on five hits with one walk. Cincinnati kept up the pressure, scoring at least one run in five of its eight offensive innings.
UCF got a spark in the fourth, when short stop Brennan Bozeman connected for his first home run of the season. On a 1-0 count, he launched one well over the fence in left field, making the score 4-1.
The Knights got it going again in the sixth, when back-to-back hits put runners on first and second with one out. First baseman Rylan Thomas ripped a single to center field allowing a runner to score from second.
Now with two outs and two runners on, second baseman Matthew Mika came up big with a double to the gap in left center. Two more runs would come home and a three-spot in the sixth made the score 7-4.
The Bearcats would get a run back in the bottom half of the frame. The Knights would get one run back in the ninth before loading the bases with two outs. The Black and Gold were ultimately unable to capitalize on the situation, as a hard line drive found a well-placed Bearcats center fielder shading to right center.
Following the series, UCF finds itself back in a three-way tie for first place in The American with Houston and South Florida at 13-8. The Knights will finish the regular season next weekend with a three-game home stand against the Bulls, with the winner of the series having a good shot at being crowned the regular-season champion.
First up, UCF travels to FAU for a midweek tilt on May 16. When the teams last met, the Owls defeated the Knights 8-3 back on April 11 at the UCF Baseball Complex.
Marc Daniels will have the call this weekend on UCFKnights.TV and iHeartRadio and FM 96.9 The Game. Fans can also click here to follow along via live stats.
