Digging In On Earth Day

Opens in a new window Community Outreach

Orlando, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) –  In celebration of Earth Day, the Knights got their hands dirty and contributed to the building a community garden in Orlando.

The Knights began their work early on April 30, and worked into the afternoon nailing together the garden beds, distributing dirt, installing underground watering systems and constructing an area designated for composting. Student-athlete volunteers represented men's soccer, rowing, volleyball, women's soccer and women's tennis.

Located in Lake Druid Park, the new garden features over 40 newly built raised garden beds, a variety of fruit trees, and a pink ribbon garden bed built specially for Libby's Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation. The pink ribbon vegetable garden was placed in the center of the garden as a part of the "grow one, give one" program of Libby's Legacy. The pink ribbon bed will provide food for survivors and serve as a place of garden therapy for those currently undergoing treatment.

The remainder of the raised gardening beds will be reserved for residents nearby to tend. UCF student-athletes were joined by various organizations throughout the Orlando community, including those from the Orlando City Foundation, members of Libby's Breast Cancer Foundation, and District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan.
