ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – By virtue of winning the American Athletic Conference Championship earlier this month, the UCF women's golf team knew it was advancing to an NCAA Regional Championship event. Thursday morning, they learned their destination.
The Knights, who are currently ranked No. 27 in the nation, will take part in the NCAA Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The NCAA Regional round will be held May 8-10.
"We are excited to be headed to Athens," UCF head coach Emily Marron said. "It's a very competitive field and we will have to play our best to advance. We have momentum coming off our conference victory. I know the team will use that to motivate them next week at regionals."
UCF enters the Athens Regional as the No. 7 seed. A total of 72 teams and 24 individuals were selected to compete at the regional championships. Each regional will feature 18 teams and six individuals. From those four regionals, the six teams with the lowest scores (along with the golfers not on advancing teams who post the three low individual scores) will advance to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship.
The 2017 national championship will be decided May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Knights have now qualified for an NCAA Regional 13 times in the past 23 years. It is UCF's fifth NCAA Regional appearance in the last six years. The Knights will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championship round for the first time since 1996.
