In its first year under the direction of head coach Johnny Dawkins, the UCF men's basketball program impressed fans in Orlando and across the country with its hard-nosed defense and exciting offense, setting records and reaching new heights, ultimately advancing to the National Invitation Tournament Final Four at Madison Square Garden.
The Knights won 24 games, doubling the team's total from a year ago, and earning the sixth best turnaround in the nation. It was the second most wins for UCF in a single season in the program's 33-year NCAA Division I history, and the most since 2005's conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
It was a special season that included wins over Mississippi State, Memphis (twice), No. 15 Cincinnati, Colorado, NIT top seed Illinois State, and Illinois. The Mar. 22 victory over the Fighting Illini that sent the Knights to New York City was in front of a sold out crowd, the first for UCF Basketball at CFE Arena.
Returning a majority of players from the 2016-17 squad, and adding plenty of talent that sat out due to transfer rules this season, the Knights are already looking forward what 2017-18 may have in store.
