ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – Junior Manuel Elvira has been named the American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Week.
The Santander, Spain native led the Knights to a team title at the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational over the weekend in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The tournament was played at PGA National on The Squire Course. Elvira was at or below par for all three rounds and finished just one stroke off the pace in the chase for individual medalist.
"Manuel had a solid performance this week," head coach Bryce Wallor said. "He led the event in Par 5 scoring at -10, with a hole average of 4.17. Manuel is a very talented student-athlete. He continues to improve on the golf course each week and he is a model student in the classroom."
Elvira fired a 4-under 68 in the first round and was even par in the second round. At 4-under, he was the individual leader after both the first and second rounds. Elvira turned in a 2-under third round to finish -6 for the tournament, but was edged at the wire, taking runner-up honors.
It was the second American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor in Elvira's career. Ironically, the first came after last year's FAU Slomin Autism Invite, when he took medalist honors in the event.
Elvira and the Knights are back in action again Saturday and Sunday at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The Knights have just two regular-season events left before the American Athletic Conference Championship, which will take place April 23-25 in Palm Harbor, Fla.
