ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Before the UCF track and field team heads into the Black and Gold Challenge on Saturday, the squad will do its part to raise awareness for those affected by autism. Prior to the start of the running events, UCF will host an Autism Awareness Walk at the UCF Track and Field Complex.
For head coach Jeanette Bolden, the cause hits close to home. Her 10-year-old nephew Jalind is affected by autism.
"I see the struggles that my sister has gone through, regarding services for him," Bolden said. "I was talking to her about different things we can do for autism awareness. I thought that this would be a good thing for my team to do."
April is Autism Awareness Month, but the Knights wanted to get a jump on bringing attention to the condition.
Partnering with UCF's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), the Knights will host a variety of events leading into the Black and Gold Challenge.
At 11 a.m., IOA Plaza will open. Food, games, inflatables and booths with information about autism will be available. At 1 p.m., a 1,000-meter run/walk/jog will take place on the track.
The Black and Gold Challenge will begin at 2 p.m. For more information click here.
