ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Breast cancer affects everyone, whether it's firsthand experience or serving as a support system for someone else.
UCF is joining the call to action. Saturday's 2 p.m. contest against East Carolina will serve as the Play4Kay game to raise breast cancer awareness.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,350 men and 40,290 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with around 232,000 new cases evolving each year.
Breast cancer has also deeply affected the women's basketball community. Former NC State head coach Kay Yow was diagnosed three separate times, and passed away after her third bout with the disease on Jan. 24, 2009.
Originally called "Think Pink," Play4Kay is an NCAA women's basketball movement to raise awareness, fund research, and honor Yow by wearing pink. Play4Kay has raised over $5 million in support of women's cancer research.
Prior to UCF's game against ECU, fans will be able to donate and participate in a silent auction to win two backpacks and a basketball signed by head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, along with other items available in the lobby.
All proceeds will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
UCF (16-9, 6-6 The American) returns to CFE Arena after a 66-62 win over No. 22 USF on Feb. 14. Junior Aliyah Gregory, who scored her 1000th career point, will be recognized following Saturday's game.
