ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The 2017 baseball season has finally arrived and the Knights are set to play host to Siena for a three-game series this weekend. Campus is buzzing as a new era under head coach Greg Lovelady is about to begin.
"It's an exciting time," Lovelady said. "There has been a lot of work put in over the last four or five months and the guys have done an unbelievable job of buying in to what we want the culture to be."
Senior ace Robby Howell will be on the mound Friday night, marking his first opening day start for the Black and Gold. Howell posted an American Athletic Conference-best 1.96 ERA last season through 101 innings pitched.
Senior Juan Pimentel gets the ball Saturday night, while redshirt junior Jason Bahr is scheduled to be on the hill Sunday. Pimentel emerged as a workhorse for the Knights last season, appearing 18 times including 13 starts.
- The Knights are 48-4 all-time against Siena and have won nine straight home openers. UCF will aim to continue the opening day trend in Lovelady's first year at the helm
- Lovelady went 124-56 in three seasons as head coach at Wright State and was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2016
- UCF returns 12 seniors and adds 12 newcomers to its roster for 2017
