ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com)—The UCF women's tennis team defeated Florida Tech, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex.
"We are really glad to get through the first two matches of the season," said head coach Bryan Koniecko. "It was a quick turnaround for us; we didn't have a lot of time for preparation. I was really pleased with the doubles point today, to win two easy matches got us off to a good start. We are excited to play a Big Ten team at Lake Nona on Sunday. It's a new chapter for our program and I know we will be ready to go."
The Knights took the doubles point with sweeps on court 1 and court 2. Senior Cortney Cesarini and junior Monica Matias defeated Alahna Reto and Caroline Walter, 6-0, at the top position. At the second doubles spot, junior Emilia Granstrom and sophomore Natalia Serrano took a 6-0 victory over Erin Egoroff and Mariana Castaneiras.
In singles, the Knights were automatically down a point after defaulting from the No. 6 position. Cesarini posted a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Egoroff at the third spot and Matias followed it up with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Kayla Hergott at the second position.
Granstrom secured the victory for the Knights as she defeated Castaneiras, 6-1, 6-0. At the top spot, Serrano defeated Reto, 6-4, 7-5.
The Knights make their debut at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus on Sunday, Jan. 15 as they take on Iowa at noon.
