Handling the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. (UCFKnights.com)—UCF Volleyball swept UConn 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-21) on Friday afternoon at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.

"This is one of the biggest road wins that we've had in a couple of years," said head coach Todd Dagenais. "I thought that Isaac, Mike and Jenny did such a great job of planning practice and forcing us to execute. The team really enjoyed the change of pace to get us prepared for this week."

Jumping out to an early 10-5 lead in the first set, the Knights maintained the advantage. UCF committed just one error and hit .400 in the first.  The Black and Gold used the momentum to jump out to a 15-11 lead in the second. The team won the second set 25-19, never recording an error and hitting at a .500 clip. The Huskies came out in the third set ready to battle. The teams went back and forth in the third, tying the score six times before the Knights took a 14-12 lead and never looked back. The Black and Gold clinched the match, 25-21.

High-Level Hitters

  • Five players had a hitting percentage over .250.
  • Freshman Alli Sabol and redshirt junior Taylor Wickey led the group, hitting .500 on the match. Freshman Jeanne Westney hit .400, while senior Taylor Gallart hit .300 and redshirt junior Kia Bright hit .281.
  • Three players recorded double-digit kills. Senior Jalé Hervey and Sabol each registered 12 kills, while Bright tallied 10.
  • For the second time since Nov. 4, 2015, the Knights recorded 20 kills in a single set. UCF not only hit .500 in the frame, but did so without committing a single error in the second set.

Dagenais on Offense: "We had an efficient offense. We were able to run from antenna to antenna the way we know we are capable of doing."

Dependable Defense

  • UCF had three players record double-digit digs in the victory. Sophomore Jordan Pingel led the team with 14, while Bright and Hervey posted 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
  • The Knights setting duo of Farah Rajaee and Miranda Watkins each recorded double-digit assists. Rajaee set 21 assists, while Watkins made 15.

Dagenais on Defense: "Jordan Pingel did a really good job at reading on defense. She put herself in position to make digs. Both Kia and Jalé were stellar in the middle back and that allowed us so many transition opportunities."

  • The Black and Gold head to Philadelphia, Penn., to take on Temple University on Sunday.
  • The teams will take the court at 1 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
