Monday Rewind

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com)—The UCF volleyball team went 1-1 in American Athletic Conference play last week. The Knights defeated Houston before falling to Tulane.

"It was one of those weeks where we just didn't really put the best product out there," said head coach Todd Dagenais. "The effort is there, the mind is there, but sometimes the body just doesn't do what the mind tells it to do. Really, I thought the entire weekend was that way. We were fortunate to come out with a win against Houston, but we ran into a perfect storm in Tulane."


 
UCF started the weekend with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20) sweep of the Cougars on Friday afternoon in Tampa. The match was moved to USF's campus due to Hurricane Matthew. The team recorded 37 kills, 34 assists, 51 digs and eight team blocks. Senior Jalé Hervey led the team with 11 kills, hitting at a .258 clip. Freshman Alli Sabol hit at a .364 clip, followed by Taylor Wickey at .400 and Jeanne Westney at .714, joining Hervey as the four Knights each hit at .250 or better.

"I thought we played well when we needed to, and I thought we scraped hard," Dagenais said after the match. "I commend (Houston) for a lot of the things they did. I thought we were able to get some really nice kills on important points, put a lot of pressure on them with our serve. I think we played some pretty good defense."

The Knights then fell to Tulane 3-0 (21-25,21-25,19-25) at The Venue on Sunday. Sabol registered eight kills, hitting .389 with two blocks.
 
"I want to congratulate Tulane on playing a flawless match," said Dagenais following the loss. "The fact remains that we walked in today and ran into a team that was not only good but a team that was hungry, that wanted it exponentially more than we did and who proved it on the floor."

UCF Volleyball, which is presented by Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area, goes on the road Oct. 14-16. The Knights take on UConn at 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m.
