TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF junior Monica Matias advances to the finals of her singles flight at the Bedford Cup, while the Knights grab three additional victories in consolation play.
After battling to a 6-4 first set victory, Matias convincingly defeated Florida International's Nina Nagode in the second, 6-1, to advance to Sunday's final of the Lindsay Davenport Flight. Matias will take on Vanja Klaric of USF Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Matias also teamed up with Cortney Cesarini to grab a doubles victory in the consolation round of the Doubles 1 Flight. The UCF duo defeated Bridget Forster and Breana Stempli of Florida A&M, 8-3, to advance to Sunday's consolation final.
Natalie Serrano snatched a win in the first consolation round of the Billie Jean King Flight, defeating Lucie Renault of Steston, 6-4, 6-3. UCF's Claudia May also won her consolation match after Arrice Robinson retired in the third set due to an illness. Both Knights will compete tomorrow morning in the final consolation round of their respective flights.
The Knights conclude action at the Bedford Cup tomorrow with the first group of matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
