ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF women's tennis opens up a new era this weekend at the Bedford Cup in Tampa under newly appointed head coach Bryan Koniecko.
The Knights return five players from last season, including four players that consistently were in the single lineup. UCF has two new additions in Australian freshman Claudia May and British transfer Elizabeth Bagerbaseh, who played two seasons at Tyler Junior College.
Koniecko enters his first season at the helm of the UCF women's tennis program after spending the last two seasons as the men's head coach at Brown. Prior to his time with the Bears, he coached at his alma mater Ohio State, serving as the women's associate head coach during the 2013-14 season and aiding the Buckeyes to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009.
All Division I programs in Florida except for the Florida Gators will be in attendance at the Bedford Cup this weekend.
The Bedford Cup is sponsored by the Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida and has been an annual traveling tournament, bringing together Division I tennis programs in Florida. It began in 2011 and has been hosted by Florida Gulf Coast, Florida, Florida State, UNF and now USF.
Matches will take place starting at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Finals and consolation finals in both singles and doubles will take place on Sunday. Times of the Sunday matches are to be determined. Parking and admission is free.
