ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com)—The UCF Volleyball team completed its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon.
The Black captured three of the four sets. Jale Hervey recorded 19 kills with a .395 hitting percentage while Jordan Pingel tallied 26 digs. Taylor Gallart posted 13 kills with a .306 hitting percentage. Ann Richards had 22 kills and Halle Scott compiled 16 digs. This was the first match-like situation the 2016 squad faced.
"We have a lot of variety this season," said Pingel. "'We have many different rotations, as well as a lot of options in serve/receive and offensively."
Head coach Todd Dagenais was very happy with the defense in today's scrimmage.
"What really stood out to me today was how well positioned we were on defense," said Dagenais. "It tells me that we put ourselves in a position to funnel the ball well. I was also pleasantly surprised on how well the freshmen played. Sometimes they (freshmen) get nervous and try to make things go too fast, but the group just settled down and played really well."
The squad boasts three captains this season (Taylor Wickey, Hervey and Richards). Hervey's goal this year as a captain was to lead by example.
"I think all three of our captains have done a good job off the court as captains," Dagenais said. "Their leadership has transitioned well to on the court. They have really gelled together and the team's effort level on the court makes it very obvious."
UCF open the 2016 campaign hosting the Holiday Inn UCF Invitational on Aug. 26. The Knights take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook at noon, followed by Kent State at 7:30 p.m.
