Griffin Returns to Florida

May 23, 2016

Louisiana Tech transfer Dayon Griffin has agreed to continue his basketball career at UCF, head men’s basketball coach Johnny Dawkins announced Monday. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the upcoming 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“Dayon is a very versatile player from the state of Florida that has a good perimeter game and the ability to distribute the ball,” said Dawkins. “He will be a big help for us in the coming years.”

Griffin started 29-of-33 games last season for the Bulldogs, finishing third on the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game. He recorded 18 double-digit scoring performances, including three 20-point efforts. The St. Petersburg, Florida, native led LaTech in three pointers with 56 and had 14 games with at least two made treys. Griffin was also a defensive threat, averaging 1.36 steals per game, which ranked eighth in Conference USA.

During his freshman season, he saw action in 28 games but played just 6.5 minutes per game.

Coming out of St. Petersburg High School, Griffin was ranked the 38th best player in the state of Florida. He led the Green Devils a 21-4 record his senior season, averaging 21 points, seven assists, five rebounds and six steals per game. He was named First Team All-Pinella County his junior and senior seasons and an All-Suncoast Honorable Mention as a senior.
