71352.jpeg Evolution of a nickname... The summer of 1970 was an eventful one for the students of Florida Technological University (the former name for UCF).

That's when votes were cast to determine the school's official athletics mascot. That summer, students approached then FTU President Charles Millican with suggestions.

"Operation Mascot" was aided by suggestion boxes and a committee comprised of students, staff and faculty members. The winning entry was announced in December of 1970. The voters chose the "Knights" of Pegasus and allied the mascot with the University Seal which prominently features Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek Mythology.

71354.jpeg When Steve Sloan became the school's athletics director in 1993, "Knights" evolved into the "Golden Knights."

Knightro is the school's mascot, dressed in full armor at UCF athletic events. A member of the UCF cheerleading team, Knightro placed 10th in the UCA Mascot National Championships in 2003. In 1999, he placed sixth and in 1996, Knightro finished fourth.
