ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Future Knight Ji Sun Kang took medalist honors Thursday at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship. Kang's victory at the LPGA International golf club in Daytona, Fla. also helped Daytona State College secure the team championship.
Kang, who will join the Knights this fall as a junior transfer, got things started with an opening round of even par on Monday. She carded consecutive sub-par rounds of -5 (67) and -4 (68) over the next two days finishing with a total score of 207 (-9).
The fourth round was called due to inclement weather and the tournament was adjusted to a 54-hole contest. Kang had a 12-shot lead after round three and showed no signs of slowing down before play was suspended indefinitely in round four.
UCF head coach Emily Marron was impressed with Kang's toughness and perseverance, as she was battling a wrist injury throughout the championship.
"I'm so happy for Ji Sun winning the national championship," Marron said. "We are so excited to add her to our team in the fall and are looking forward to her continued success here at UCF."
Kang's dominance helped the Falcons build a 25-shot lead, securing the NJCAA Team National Championship for Daytona State in addition to her individual title.
