ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - While the American Conference Championship began with overcast skies and high winds, the Knights came out strong led by juniors Ashley Holder and Ayaka Nakayama. The defending champs are tied for third following Sunday's opening round.
Nakayama fired back-to-back birdies on her first two holes. She would add a third birdie on the sixth before conditions worsened. Nakayama carded a three-over par 75 and finished tied for sixth among individuals as winds gusted to well over 20 miles per hour late in the round.
Holder also had a solid start, shooting par on the first six holes before adding her first birdie. She continued the streak, adding two more birdies and three pars before a series of bogeys in her final six holes brought her score back up over par. Holder also finished tied for sixth with a 75 (+3).
Junior Johanna Larsson shot 78 (+6) and is tied for 14th overall. Freshman Erica Stoner turned in an 83 (+11) while senior Mary Mulcahy finished the day with a 85 (+13).
In team play, East Carolina (+21) and Memphis (+21) are tied atop the leaderboard while UCF, South Florida, and Memphis are all tied for third (+23), just two shots off the pace.
Second round action is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. EST Monday at Hammock Beach Resort's Ocean Course in Palm Coast, Fla. Click here to follow the Knights via live scoring.
