ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - No. 25 UCF Softball completed its weekend sweep with a pair wins over South Dakota and LIU at the UCF Softball Complex on Saturday evening. The Knights run-ruled their second straight opponent, topping South Dakota, 8-0, in five innings, before closing the weekend with a 3-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn.
"We really take pride in what we do," senior Jessica Ujvari said. "We're inspired to play, and it's showing. It's something that I'm proud of, and I'm proud of my teammates too."
UCF improves to 12-8 on the season, and swept all four games at the UCF Tournament to extend its winning streak to eight.
Jessica Ujvari and junior Willow Kalinen each drove in a pair of runs against South Dakota, while redshirt senior Jasmine Acevedo knocked two hits in the win. Senior Jamie Ujvari tossed a one-hit complete game and struck out nine in her third win of the season.
Je. Ujvari batted in the first run against LIU, and senior Samantha McCloskey's RBI single scored the game-winning run against the Blackbirds. Senior Shelby Turnier earned her fifth win of the season, while Ja. Ujvari earned her second save of 2016.
Cruising Over The Coyotes
? The Knights posted their second consecutive five-inning win with an 8-0 win over South Dakota.
? After a scoreless first inning, UCF plated a pair of runs in the second. Jasmine Acevedo batted in the first run with an RBI triple, then scored on a single from Willow Kalinen. The Knights led 2-0 after two innings.
? A two-run double from Jessica Ujvari started a three-run third inning for UCF.
? Freshman Cassady Brewer led off with a walk in the bottom of the fifth, and moved to second after senior Kalyn Cenal was hit by a pitch. Acevedo loaded the bases with a bunt, and Brewer scored on a bases-loaded walk.
? UCF pushed its seventh run of the game across on a groundout, and Acevedo scored on a wild pitch to help the Knights run-rule South Dakota.
Down Came The Blackbirds
? Saturday's nightcap started with three and a half scoreless innings. LIU loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but a line drive to sophomore Courtney Rotton ended the inning before the Blackbirds were able to push a run across.
? Jessica Ujvari put the Knights up first with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. Samantha McCloskey's RBI single pushed the UCF advantage to 2-0 heading to the fifth inning.
? The Blackbirds cut UCF's lead in half in the top of the fifth, but a pair of strikeouts from Jamie Ujvari kept LIU from getting any closer in the sixth.
? UCF added cushion to its score in the bottom of the sixth, as senior Kalyn Cenal's hard hit ball bounced off of third base and allowed a run to score.
? Ja. Ujvari struck out the side in the seventh to seal UCF's eighth consecutive win.
Sister, Sister
? Jamie Ujvari and Jessica Ujvari played key roles as the Knights won twice on Saturday
? Ja. Ujvari earned her third start of the season, tossing a one-hit complete-game shutout of South Dakota. She earned her second save of the season against LIU, striking out five over two innings.
? The right-handed pitcher from Pensacola, Fla., fanned nine batters, setting a new career-best at UCF. She struck out at least one Coyote in every inning, and had multiple strikeouts in three of the five innings.
? Je. Ujvari went 3-for-4 at the plate on Saturday. She drove in three runs, and drew a pair of walks.
Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie on Jamie Ujvari: "Jamie did a fantastic job in both games, opening up the first game and then being able to close that second game. She was definitely on today."
Next Up
The Knights are back in action on March 8, hosting Illinois State and Ball State in a round-robin tournament. UCF faces Ball State at 3:30 p.m., before facing Illinois State at 6 p.m.
