ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - It was a rough start for the UCF women's golf team in New Orleans, La, as the team is 16th after the opening round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.
With junior standout Ashley Holder out due to an illness, senior Mary Mulcahy led the Knights, carding a two-over par 74. After a slow start on her first three holes, Mulcahy notched two birdies and 10 pars through her next 12 holes. She is tied for 31st among individuals heading into day two.
Junior Ayaka Nakayama and freshman Dree Fausnaugh turned in matching rounds of 75 (+3). Nakayama found a hot streak at the turn, playing a bogie free back nine and sinking a birdie on the par-3 eighth.
Junior Johanna Larsson ended the day at 81 (+9) while freshman Erica Stoner shot 83 (+11).
No. 12 Arizona and No. 13 Oklahoma State share the lead at -1 while No. 11 Florida and tournament host Tulane are tied for third at even par. Miami rounds out the top 5 at +3.
