No. 15 UCF - No. 9 Arizona Stats
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 15 UCF softball team matched No. 9 Arizona run-for-run in the first three innings, but the Wildcats pulled away down the stretch for a 19-4 win at the Mary Nutter Classic on Saturday afternoon.
UCF (4-5) held the early edge, scoring on an RBI single from freshman Autumn Gillespie in the bottom of the first. The Knights took a 1-0 lead to the second inning.
The Wildcats responded with a three-run second inning and added a fourth run in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage. The Black and Gold countered with a three-run showing of their own in the bottom of the frame, led by Gillespie.
A fielding error allowed sophomore Courtney Rotton to reach, and senior Jessica Ujvari was hit by a pitch, putting a pair of runners on for Gillespie. The Redlands, Calif., native worked a 1-1 count before sending one out of the park. Her first collegiate home run sailed down the left field line and tied the ball game heading to the fourth inning.
Arizona (8-1) outscored UCF 15-0 in the final three innings to pull away for the 19-4 win.
The Knights continue Mary Nutter Classic action this evening, facing No. 4 LSU at 8:30 p.m. ET. UCF closes the weekend on Sunday against No. 11 Washington at 2:30 p.m. ET.
