ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The 2016 UCF Challenge began under cold grey skies Sunday, with winds gusting to nearly 20 miles per hour. Tournament host UCF is ninth after the opening round at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
The No. 22 player in the nation (golfstat rankings), junior Ashley Holder, led the Knights on day one shooting a one-over par 73. She carded three birdies on the round and is just two shots off the pace. After narrowly missing a birdie putt on the par 3 eleventh, Holder finished strong draining a birdie from six feet on her final hole.
Junior Ayaka Nakayama and freshman Dree Fausnaugh each turned in rounds of 76 (+4). Senior Mary Mulcahy shot 81 (+9) and junior Johanna Larsson shot 82 (+10). Freshman Erica Stoner turned in an 83 (+11) playing as an individual.
In team play, Houston grabbed the first-round lead at +7 while Texas is four shots back at +11. Iowa State, Missouri, and Augusta are all tied for third at +13.
Missouri's Michelle Butler and Tulane's Emily Penttila are tied atop the individual leaderboard at -1. Five players are tied at even par with four more just two-shots back at +1.
