FORT MYERS, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's tennis team posted three singles and two doubles victories on Friday in the Bedford Cup at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The doubles tandem of senior Clare Mendell and sophomore Monica Matias posted a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman's Ancia Ifill and Alejandra Vidal to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Teammates Sofia Baptista and Caroline Eberhart clinched an exciting 7-5 win in the consolation quarters over Jess Cortes Chaves and Ana Roman Dominquez of South Florida.
Baptista found success in the first round of singles play on Friday by knocking off Elizabeth Means of FGCU, 6-2, 7-5. Matias and freshmen Diana Dehterevich each earned a first round victory in the B Singles Flight over Florida Atlantic's Marisa Ruiz and Jennifer Leib.
Mendell and Matias are set to battle in the B flight doubles semifinals on Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eberhart, Baptista and Emilia Granstrom return to the courts for the Flight A Singles consolation draw on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Taking the court at 1:00 p.m. will be Dehterevich and Matias in the Flight B Singles consolation draw.
