CHARLESTON, S.C. (UCFKnights.com) - The opening round of the Powerade Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Club is in the books. After day one, the UCF women's golf team is in second place, just six shots behind tournament leader Arkansas.
Junior Ashley Holder led the Knights with an impressive five birdies, carding a 3-under par round of 69. Holder played a flawless back nine carding three birdies and six pars. She is currently tied for third among individuals.
"Ashley had a lot of good opportunities for birdies today," UCF head coach Emily Marron said. "Her game fits this course nicely and if she sticks to her game plan I'm sure she will have a few more low rounds in her."
Sophomore Laura Sojo turned in an even-par round of 72, while junior transfer Johanna Larsson shot 73 (+1) in her debut as a Knight. Junior Ayaka Nakayama carded a 74 (+2) and senior Mary Mulcahy shot 78 (+6).
UCF notched 14 birdies, 59 pars and led the field in scoring on par five's. "We are pleased with a good opening round," Marron said. "The team played very mature golf today and didn't make any big mistakes. This is a great field and we realize we will have to come out prepared the next two days to remain near the top."
In team competition, the Knights (E) are six shots back of Arkansas (-6) and hold a one-stroke advantage over Wake Forest (+1). Georgia and Florida are tied for fourth (+2) with Virginia (+5) alone in sixth.
Round two is slated for 7:45 a.m. Monday. Click Here to follow the Knights via live scoring.
