JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) -- Three members of the UCF track and field team moved one step closer to punching a ticket to Eugene and the NCAA Championships on Thursday. J'Nea Bellamy and Briana Vaughn advanced to the quarterfinals in the 100 meter dash, while Sandy Jean earned a spot in the quarters in the 400 meter hurdles.
Jean and fellow senior Devinn Cartwright started things off for the Knights at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium Thursday evening. Cartwright failed to advance to the next round, but Jean made her way past the first round thanks to a fast qualifying time in the 400 hurdles.
Jean crossed the line in a time of 58.67 seconds, which was just .03 seconds off of her fastest time of the season. The quickest section on the day, Jean's group picked up six qualifiers to the next round as she finished fifth of the bunch. Her quarterfinals will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. with the top 12 making it to nationals in Eugene, Oregon.
It was a trio of sprinters attempting to advance next in the 100 meter dash. Vaughn ran in the first heat and automatically qualified for Friday's quarterfinals with a third place finish. She finished in 11.65 seconds, a season-best for the junior.
Junior Christal Peterson was up next in heat four, and after finishing sixth in a time of 11.73 seconds, she narrowly missed out on advancing. Bellamy followed with a second place finish in heat five to earn an automatic berth to the next round. The sophomore recorded a time of 11.60 seconds, which was good for the 14th fastest on the day. The 100 meter dash quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Sophomore Ashley Jocelyn ended up just .07 seconds off of joining her three teammates in the next round. She placed fourth in the fifth heat of the 400 meter dash, recording a time of 53.58 seconds. The top three finishers in each heat advance automatically. It marked the third straight race that Jocelyn ran under 54 seconds and it was her second fastest finish ever.
Senior Amelia Williams and freshman Rosie Chamberlain capped off the first day of competition in Jacksonville for the Knights. Williams placed seventh in her section of the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.88, while Chamberlain recorded a time of 2:08.37 to take sixth in her heat.
Bellamy, Vaughn and Jean will compete in quarterfinal action on Friday. Bellamy and Vaughn will also race in the 200 meter dash first round on Friday, joining Peterson and senior Kirsten Nieuwendam for the event. Friday starts with freshman Johna' Whitaker in the first round of the 100 meter hurdles at 5 p.m.
