TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Senior Farrah Sullivan's solo home run gave UCF Softball an early lead, but as top-seed Florida State rallied for a 2-1 win at JoAnne Graf Field on Saturday.
"It was just a great (hard) fought game," UCF head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. "Coming in we knew that FSU was going to be a very tough challenge. We knew they had two pitchers that were going to be very tough against us and our two pitchers. It's a great fought game. That's the way you want us (to play) in the regional and I thought they all did a great job."
UCF (49-8) now faces the winner of the South Carolina - Dartmouth matchup in an elimination game later this afternoon.
Junior Shelby Turnier fanned six batters in the loss, allowing just four hits.
Sullivan broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth inning. She put the Knights on the scoreboard first as her fourth home run of the season was a solo shot over the left field fence.
UCF had an opportunity to add to its lead in the top of the seventh. Junior Jessica Ujvari opened with a single to right center and advanced to second on a throwing error. After junior pinch runner Kirsten Foster moved to third on a wild pitch, sophomore Brittany Solis drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners.
FSU pitched around junior Samantha McCloskey, loading the bases with one out. The Seminoles got the force out at home, leaving Knights around the bases with two outs, but a groundout ended UCF's chances.
Maddie O'Brien opened the bottom of the frame with a solo home run that tied the game at 1-1. A walk put the go-ahead runner on first and a triple down the right field line allowed FSU to claim the 2-1 win.
The Knights kept the Seminoles off the board for six innings, stranding 11 FSU runners.
