STORRS, Conn. (UCFKnights.com) -- Kalen Hambrick's third place finish in the hammer throw highlighted the UCF track and field team's first day of competition at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Thursday in Storrs, Conn.
"I felt pretty good," Hambrick said. "When I started competing I just said I had to do something to get us some points. I threw a personal best so I can't be too upset over third place. I really wanted first or second, but I'm happy with it."
Hambrick, a redshirt-junior, recorded a personal record while earning six points for the Knights in the hammer. Her third attempt went 56.67m/185-11, topping her previous best of 56.36 meters, which she set at home last season.
"Coming into the conference meet you want everyone at their best," UCF assistant head coach Jeff Chakouian said. "Kalen came in and competed very well, she was very composed and got a PR. If you ask her, she knows there is more in there, but you have to happy when you come to a conference meet and you leave with a PR."

Rosie Chamberlain, Amelia Williams, Ne'Ausha Logan and Caroline Pauls will get things going for the Knights on the track with the 800 meter trials at 3 p.m. Sandy Jean and Devinn Cartwright, who hold the top two times in the league, will then take part in the 400 meter hurdle trials.
Five Knights are scheduled to run in the 200 meter dash trials to end the day, including sophomore J'Nea Bellamy, who currently has the fastest time in the conference.
Fans can watch all of the action on the American Digital Network. Live Results, as well as the UCF Track and Field Twitter and Instagram accounts, are available for updates during competition.
