JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF senior right fielder Erik Barber connected on two solo homers, registered a career-high four hits and drove in three runs Tuesday in a 10-5 loss at North Florida in the final mid-week matchup of the season. A four-hit contest was also tallied by senior center fielder Derrick Salberg at Harmon Stadium.
Two hits including a solo shot was delivered by senior left fielder JoMarcos Woods. The Knights recorded a game-high 12 hits.
The UCF (30-23) offense started to work early with three hits and an error leading to two runs in the first inning. Salberg singled to right center and Williams drew a walk before sophomore designated hitter Matt Diorio registered an RBI base hit to right center. A base knock to left by Barber extended the UCF lead to 2-0.
After North Florida (40-13) cut the deficit to 2-1 on a solo homer by Donnie Dewees in the second, Woods started off the fourth frame with a blast to right center, 3-1.
Another lead-off round tripper was notched by the Knights when Barber drilled a shot to left for his eighth of the season, 4-1, in the fifth inning.
The Ospreys took advantage of a Knights' error with two outs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead, 5-4. After a wild pitch scored a run, Ryan Roberson blasted a three-run homer to left.
North Florida tacked on a run in sixth inning before increasing the advantage to 10-4 in the seventh frame with four runs on three hits.
Roberson tallied three hits for the Ospreys, while two hits and two RBI were added by Kyle Brooks. The victory was notched by Alex Smith (5-1), who went two innings and fanned two.
Senior right-handed pitcher Spencer Davis provided the Knights with five innings of work and struck out a pair of batters, but suffered his first loss of the season. Senior Parker Thomas, Tanner Olson, sophomore Drew Faintch and freshman Brad Rowley also saw time on the mound.
UCF finishes the regular season with a three-game set at USF that begins on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The middle game of the series starts at 7 p.m. and is also broadcasted on CBS Sports Network. The finale is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
The American Athletic Conference Championship is scheduled for May 19-24 in Clearwater, Fla., with the seeding to be determined.
