ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF notched its 10th win of the season on Saturday afternoon against UAB, 4-0. The Knights conducted a youth clinic following the contest at the UCF Tennis Complex as a part of the USTA Campus Kids' Days.
The group of kids had an opportunity to interact with the Knights' student-athletes and learn about the fundamentals of tennis.
In the doubles competition, UCF (10-6) saw juniors Clare Mendell and Sofia Baptista register a 6-2 victory at No. 2. The tandem of sophomore Cortney Cesarini and freshman Monica Matias clinched the first point against UAB (6-11) with a 6-4 victory.
Freshman Kennan Johnson pushed the UCF lead to 2-0 by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Junior Caroline Eberhart at No. 1 won the first set 6-1 and had a 4-0 lead in the second set when her opponent retired.
The Knights clinched the 4-0 victory at No. 5 with Matias recording a 6-4, 6-3 triumph. It was her 25th win of the season, moving into a tie for fifth on the single-season charts with teammate Eberhart (2012-13).
Cesarini, Mendell and Baptista each won their first set before the UCF win was secured.
The Black and Gold will hit the road next Wednesday to face off against in-state opponent Stetson in DeLand, Fla. at 2 p.m. The unit will then return home to host Louisiana-Lafayette in the final regular season match of the spring April 11 at noon.
