ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF notched straight-set singles victories by junior Sofia Baptista, sophomore Cortney Cesarini, freshmen Kennan Johnson and Monica Matias to register a 4-2 victory Friday against FIU at the UCF Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, Matias and Cesarini for UCF (9-7) combined at No. 3 to record a 7-6 win. The other two matches went to tiebreakers as well with FIU (10-7) taking them to clinch the doubles' point.
The Knights bounced back in singles action with freshman Kennan Johnson knotting the match, 1-1, with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Baptista put UCF on top with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set triumph.
After the Panthers tied the match, 2-2, Cesarini registered a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2. The match was clinched on the 24th singles win of the season by Matias with a pair of 6-3 victories at No. 5. She moved into tie with Jing Chen (1994-95) at 24 wins in a campaign.
The Knights are set to battle UAB on Saturday at noon. As a part of the USTA Campus Kids' Days, UCF will conduct a youth clinic following the match at approximately 3 p.m. For more information, call (407) 823-4943.
