ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) -- Looking to secure a four-match win streak heading into the American Athletic Conference tournament, UCF lined up for a bout with Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon and cruised to a 6-1 victory. The triumph was the team's 12th of the season and the 10th at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The Knights (12-6, 2-5 The American) claimed the doubles point early after a shortage of action led to an eight game pro set at both No. 1 and No. 2. Partners Caroline Eberhart and Kennan Johnson routed the Ragin' Cajuns 8-1 to lock up the 1-0 lead.
Freshman Monica Matias set the tone for the match with her 26th win of the season behind a 6-0, 6-1 effort at the No. 5 position. The Puerto Rico native now trails Hadas Roner (1996-97) by two matches for the single-season record. Johnson joined her freshman counterpart with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 performance over Alexandra Way at No. 3.
Playing through a grueling match at No. 1, Eberhart toughed out a 6-2, 3-2 head start before her opponent retired. Sophomore Cortney Cesarini would go on to wrap up the day and close out regular season play with an impressive 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2.
The Black and Gold will now set their sights on the conference tournament beginning April 15 in Tulsa, Okla.
