ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The Knights hosted a home meet at the UCF Track & Field Complex for the second straight weekend, and for the second straight weekend the Knights won.
UCF defeated 10 other scoring teams to take home the UCF Invitational title with 172 total points on Senior Day in Orlando. USF placed second with 124 points, FIU was third with 65 points and Nova Southeastern took fourth with 57.
The Knights recognized seniors Devinn Cartwright, Sandy Jean, Ne'Ausha Logan, Kirsten Nieuwendam and Amelia Williams for their accomplishments during their time at UCF on Saturday. Each one scored in the meet.
The running events began in the Knights' favor as freshman Kalleigh Forrester won the 3,000 meter steeple chase in her first time competing in the event at the collegiate level. She crossed the line in a time of 11:12.57.
UCF took home five more first place finishes on the track and one in the field. The 4x100 meter relay team kept the success going with a 45.69 second mark that earned the Knights another 10 points.
Johna' Whitaker led the Knights in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best of 13.59 seconds to place third. She was the top collegiate finisher in the event and her time is tied for the third fastest in the region coming into the day. Lia King also recorded a personal best in the event with a time of 14.25 seconds and placed seventh.
The Knights dominated the 800 meter run for the second straight week taking first, second and third place. Rosie Chamberlain won and broke the UCF freshman record for the second Saturday in a row, crossing the line in 2:08.89. Her time is the third fastest in the region as of Saturday morning.
Seniors Williams and Logan followed up Chamberlain in second and third, respectively. The former ran a personal best time of 2:09.62, while the latter finished right wither her in 2:09.69.
Another pair of seniors led the way in the 400 meter hurdles. Jean won the event in a time of 1:00.08, which is currently the sixth fast time in the east region. Cartwright was neck-and-neck with her teammate, crossing the line in 1:00.34 to take second place.
Ashley Jocelyn came out on top in the 200 meter dash, finishing in 24.04 seconds. Senior Nieuwendam earned the Knights points in the event as well, placing fifth in a time of 24.57 seconds.
UCF put four runners in the top seven of the 5,000 meters, all of which ran personal bests. Laura Korsmit placed third in 18:02.49, Amy Ankli was fourth in 18:18.94, Ashton McMurray took fifth in 18:23.48, and Claire Castillo crossed the line in 19:05.80 for seventh place.
The Knights finished the day on the track by taking first and second place in the 4x400 meter relay. The winning squad finished in 3:44.91, while the other foursome recorded a time of 3:45.75.
Kalen Hambrick got things started on the right foot for the Knights in the field events on Friday, placing second in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.75 meters. Saturday morning it was Tara Daniels opening things up with a third place finish in the discus. She threw a personal best 39.62 meters.
Cartwright added a second place finish in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.55 meters, and King jumped for a personal best 12.45 meters to win the triple jump. King's distance in the event is tied for the fifth best in the region coming into Saturday.
UCF will continue the 2015 campaign next weekend at the Florida Relays in Gainesville.
