ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF built a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and registering singles wins by junior Sofia Baptista and freshman Monica Matias. USF evened the score with three singles victories and clinched the match by taking the third set at No. 2, 6-4.
In the doubles competition, junior Clare Mendell / Baptista opened with a 6-2 victory at No. 2, before USF took the match at No. 1, 6-1. The Knights secured the point with a 6-2 win by junior Cortney Cesarini / Matias at No. 3.
The Knights (8-6, 3-5 The American) took the first two singles matches to open a 3-0 advantage. Matias cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5, while Baptista tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the sixth slot.
USF (3-11, 1-2 The American) fought back by taking matches at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 1 to knot the contest, 3-3. Cesarini at No. 2 won the first fame, 6-3, and fell in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). A 6-4 victory in the third set by Olga Martinez clinched the match for the Bulls.
The Knights welcome Drexel to the UCF Tennis Complex on Friday with the match set to begin at 2 p.m.
Coming up on April 4, the Knights host UAB. The match is set for noon and as a part of the USTA Campus Kids' Days the team will conduct a youth clinic following the contest at approximately 3 p.m. For more information, call (407) 823-4943.
