+ VIDEO: Diorio Drives in Seven Runs
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF sophomore left fielder Matt Diorio blasted a ninth-inning grand slam, but his seven RBI were not enough as the sixth-ranked Knights fell 13-9 on Tuesday evening at Jacksonville. Both teams played through a light rain all evening at Sessions Stadium.
The seven RBI were the most by a UCF (20-6) player since Chris Duffy accomplished the feat against Hartford-2 (3/13/10). Diorio tallied an RBI double down the left field line in the fourth and a two-run homer to right in the sixth inning.
A two-run blast off the scoreboard in right was delivered by senior first baseman James Vasquez in the sixth frame to knot the contest, 5-5. Senior third baseman Tommy Williams also notched a pair of base hits, including a double, for the Knights.
After UCF tied the game, Jacksonville (12-11) responded with a three-run sixth to retake the lead and extended the advantage with five runs over the next two frames, 13-5.
Austin Hays led the Dolphins with three hits, including a homer, and three runs driven in. A three RBI performance was also recorded by Connor Marabell. The victory was registered by Spencer Stockton (2-1), who tossed three innings of relief and fanned three.
Junior lefty Harrison Hukari (3-1) was tagged with the loss for the Knights.
UCF opens play in the American Athletic Conference by hosting preseason-favorite No. 15 Houston this weekend. The first pitches of the series are set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
The UCF Dugout Club will hold a BBQ prior to Saturday's contest at Houston. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. and the cost is $10, which includes the meal and membership into the UCF Dugout Club at the email level.
