ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - After a tough loss to Tulsa on Wednesday, UCF bounced back with a 6-1 win against Temple on Saturday afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Knights won four three-set matches to clinch the match.
The Knights (8-5, 3-4 The American) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the doubles competition. Juniors Clare Mendell and Sofia Baptista cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 2. An identical 6-2 score from junior Caroline Eberhart and freshman Kennan Johnson at No. 1 clinched the point.
A straight-set victory by sophomore Cortney Cesarani at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, put UCF up, 2-0. Four of the remaining five matches went to a decisive third set.
Johnson dropped the first set and rallied to a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the final two frames at No. 3. The Knights clinched the match at No. 5, when freshman Monica Matias, who dropped a second-set tiebreaker, 7-4, captured the third frame, 6-1.
At No. 4, Mendell fell in the first 7-5, but rebounded with a 6-4 win to knot the match before cruising in the third set, 6-0. The sixth point for the Knights was notched by Baptista, who battled back after falling in the first and tallied a pair of victories, 6-4, 7-5.
Junior Annika Hepp at No. 7 also notched a third-set triumph, 6-3. She took the first set, 6-1, but fell in the second, 6-3.
UCF heads to in-state rival USF on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match. The Knights return home to face Drexel on Friday at 2 p.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
