ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The 2015 UCF Challenge kicked off Sunday as the defending champion Knights played host to 17 teams at Eagle Creek Golf Club. After the first of three rounds, UCF is tied with East Carolina for fourth place. Senior Monifa Sealy led the Knights, carding a 70 (-2) and is currently tied for 10th place.
Sealy said she found a rhythm early. She posted five birdies, including back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight. I made a long putt for par on number five, Sealy said. After that, I really got it going.
Senior Fanny Cnops, who took home medalist honors last year, got off to a slow start before making birdie on four of her last eight holes. She posted a first-round tally of 72 (E).
Freshman Laura Sojo was solid, notching 15 pars and two birdies to finished the day at 1-under par. Sophomore Ashley Holder shot a 74 (+2) and senior Robyn Doig turned in a 78 (+6).
Juniors Mary Mulcahy, Paola Robles and sophomore Ayaka Nakayama played as individuals for the Knights. Mulcahy and Robles carded matching rounds of 75 (+3) while Nakayama finished with a 79 (+7).
In team play, Vanderbilt (-11) has a three-shot lead over Iowa State (-7). Virginia (-6) is third. Second-round action is slated for 8:30 a.m. Monday.
