DALLAS, Texas (UCFKnights.com) - Suffering their third 4-3 road loss on the season to SMU Saturday afternoon, the Knights overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat UT-Arlington 4-2 early Sunday morning. The victory at SMU's indoor facility in Dallas comes as the squad's first road win in the spring.
Heading into today's bout with the Mavericks, UCF (5-4, 1-3 The American) held an overall 18-5 record in doubles action. However, UTA (6-3) would halt the team's heralded force with solid wins over partners Sofia Baptista / Clare Mendell, 6-4, and Cortney Cesarini / Monica Matias, 6-3. Junior Caroline Eberhart and freshman Kennan Johnson appeared to be on their way to a triumph at the No. 1 position with a 5-4 score but did not finish play due to UTA securing the doubles point.
Bouncing back after dropping her first match of the season yesterday, Matias closed out a tough fight at No. 5 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory, while Cesarini and Baptista would go on to deliver comfortable straight set wins at both No. 2 and No. 6.Mendell would clinch the Knights' first triumph on the roadat No. 4 by defeating UTA's Jessica Birowski 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) in the closet contest of the morning.
The Black and Gold went 1-1 on its two-match stand in Texas and will return home to host FAU on Feb. 28 at noon.
