NEW ORLEANS, La. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's golf team got off to a solid start Sunday in the opening round of the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. After a tough scoring day at the English Turn Golf and Country Club, the Knights are in fifth place at seven-over par, with three players in the top 20.

Despite warm and sunny conditions, just eight of the 81 players in the field finished the first round with scores below par. LSU's Madelene Sagstrom turned in an impressive 68 (-4) to lead all players.

UCF junior Paola Robles and sophomore Ashley Holder are tied for 12th after each carded a 73 (+1) Sunday. Robles played a flawless front nine notching three birdies and six pars.

I got off to a good start and made a few putts early on, Robles said. There are a few shots I would like to have back from the back nine, but I learned from that and will adjust my game plan for tomorrow.

UCF senior Monifa Sealy wrapped up the opening round with a 74 (+2) besting freshman teammate Laura Sojo (75, +3) by just one shot. Senior Fanny Cnops shot six-over par to round out scoring for the Knights.

In team play, LSU jumped out to a big lead thanks to par or better performances from its three top players. The Tigers are atop the leaderboard at -4 and hold a seven-stroke edge over tournament host Tulane (+3). UCLA is eight-shots back at +4, Vanderbilt holds the number four spot at +6 and UCF (+7) rounds out the top five.

Conditions are expected to worsen overnight with a cold front bringing high winds and plummeting temperatures for the second and third rounds.

The second round is slated to begin Monday at 9 a.m. with UCF first tee time beginning at 9:45 a.m. Click here to follow the Knights with live scoring.
