DALLAS, Texas (UCFKnights.com) - On day one of the Knights' road trip to Texas, the unit dropped a close bout 4-3 to American Athletic Conference foe SMU in Dallas.
Behind the efforts of partners Caroline Eberhart / Kennan Johnson and Cortney Cesarini / Monica Matias, the Black and Gold secured the team's sixth-straight doubles point on the season. Cesarini and Matias captured the early score with a 6-4 effort at No. 3, while Eberhart and Johnson improved to 5-1 at the No. 1 slot by toughing out a 6-4 triumph.
UCF (4-4, 1-3 The American) locked up the team's second-point with a swift rout of the Mustang's Mary Wright, 6-4, 6-3, by junior Sofia Baptista at No. 6. Overcoming a close fight at No. 2, Cesarini delivered a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 victory for the Knights' third and final point on the day.
SMU (6-0, 1-0 The American) continued its push in singles play by winning three of the squad's four points in straight sets. Junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova extended her undefeated mark to seven at No. 5 by knocking off UCF freshman Monica Matias 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-3. The loss was Matias' first of the season.
The Knights will cap off its stay in Texas with a matchup against UT-Arlington tomorrow at noon. The squad will return home to begin a five-game homestand, starting with FAU on Feb. 28 at noon.
