JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Traveling north to face off against North Florida, the Knights aimed to extend their win streak to three and capture their first victory on the road. However, the team's efforts would fall just short as the Ospreys claimed the 4-3 triumph Wednesday.
The match swung in favor of the Black and Gold early behind the play of doubles partners Cortney Cesarini and Monica Matias, who delivered a swift 6-2 success over UNF's Vazquez / Zuniga. Junior Caroline Eberhart and freshman Kennan Johnson ensured the doubles point by rolling to a 6-4 victory at No. 1. The team now holds a combined 16-5 record in doubles action.
The Knights fell behind 2-1 after dropping singles matches at both No. 2 and No. 5, but the team remained tough behind the play of Matias at No. 6 and Eberhart at No. 1. Matias dropped the first set 6-0 but bounced back by defeating Rebeca Pereira 6-1, 7-6 (7). Eberhart came out strong, delivering a 6-0 performance in the first but let the second set slip 6-7 (1-7). The Indiana native keyed back in and would go on to win the third 6-3.
While the team found success in two of its matches that went to a third set, UCF was unable to come through in close matches at No. 3 and No. 4. Johnson took her opponent to a third set by winning the second but lost 0-6, 6-3, 4-6. Junior Clare Mendell won her opening set 6-4 but could not hang on as she dropped the next two sets 1-6, 4-6 at No. 4.
The Knights will look to regain their focus against SMU Feb. 21 and UT Arlington Feb. 22 in Texas.
