ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The Knights capped off their two-game home stand in fashion on Friday, securing a 6-1 victory over UConn at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Black and Gold moved to 4-2 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 4-3.
UCF has proved to be a force to be reckoned with in doubles play this spring as the team served up three wins and extended its record to 14-4. Partners Caroline Eberhart / Kennan Johnson at No. 1 and Cortney Cesarini / Monica Matias at No. 3 each notched 6-4 victories. Juniors Sofia Baptista and Clare Mendell teamed for a 6-3 triumph at No. 2 to clinch the sweep.
Posting four straight-set wins, the squad carried its momentum into singles action. Matias made quick work at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Shea Flanagan, while at No. 3 Johnson closed out her victory with a convincing second set 7-5, 6-1.
Eberhart dropped her first set 7-5 but rallied back to seal the win 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 1. Pushing through a back-and-forth battle with Summer Walker was Baptista, who delivered a 7-5, 6-4 outing at No. 5. Mendell added to the Knights' run at No. 4, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 rout over Zaina Zaki.
The Black and Gold will travel north Feb. 18 to face off with UNF for the beginning of a three-game road trip. The team will then fly to Texas to battle SMU Feb. 21 and UT Arlington Feb. 22.
