TULSA, Okla. (UCFKnights.com) - In a game that featured nine lead changes and six tied scores, the UCF women's basketball team and Tulsa battled it out until the end. Unfortunately, the Knights (7-14, 3-7) ran out of time in their quest to sweep their conference opponent in Saturday's 70-61 loss.
As the American's leading scorer, UCF's own Zykira Lewis, struggled with an uncharacteristic 7-point performance, several Knights stepped up to lead the charge. Freshman Fifi Ndour tallied a career-high 15 points along with her team-high 7 rebounds. Senior guard Andrea Hines added a season-high 13 points and freshman Aliyah Gregory rounded out the group with 10 points.
UCF did not allow Tulsa (11-10, 6-4) to score a field goal for the first 5:43 and took advantage with a 10-1 run. However, once Ashley Clark netted a fast break layup, she kick started a 13-2 stretch for the Hurricane.
Hines sank a 3-pointer in front of the Tulsa bench to end UCF's four minute drought and tie it up at 15, but the Hurricane responded with 8 unanswered points.
Tulsa would lead by as much as 10 points in the first half before some transition points from Ndour and Gregory along with four-straight free throws by Stephanie Taylor and Gregory closed out the half on a 9-0 run for the Black and Gold. The teams entered the locker rooms locked in at 29-29.
Although she didn't score in the first half for the first time of her career, Lewis opened up the second half with a 3-pointer that reclaimed the lead for the Knights.
Neither team could pull away until Clark hit a jumper with 4:53 remaining that gave Tulsa the lead for good. Clark and Kadan Brady were able to carry their team the rest of the way, sealing the game at the free throw line, where the Hurricane converted 17-of-21 for the night.
The Knights meet archrival USF for the first time this year when they travel to Tampa for a Tuesday matchup on the American Digital Network at 7 p.m.
