DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF recorded seven wins on Friday afternoon at the Juan Varon Memorial Wildcat Tennis Invitational at the Florida Tennis Center. The Knights advanced both doubles teams and all five singles players in the first round of matches.
Doubles action started the tournament with sophomore Monica Matias and junior Clare Mendell cruising to a pair of 6-1 victories over Ocampo/Grandji of Warner in the A flight. The duo of junior Sofia Baptista and sophomore Annika Hepp notched a 6-1, 6-0 win against Copeland/Tripp from Eastern Florida State College.
The momentum continued for UCF in the singles competition as Baptista and Hepp swept their opponents in the A and C flights, respectively. Freshman Kennan Johnson registered a 6-3, 6-3, triumph over FIT's Erin Egoroff.
In Singles B, Mendell and Matias tallied quick work of their opponents, yielding a total of five points in the four sets over players from Eastern Florida State and Warner.
The Knights continue the thee-day invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles action followed by singles play.
