DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF registered three wins to begin the Juan Varon Memorial Wildcat Tennis Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Florida Tennis Center. Junior Jose Sangroniz and freshman Nico De Fraia advanced in singles competition.
During Doubles A, freshman Tyler Pate and Sangroniz dropped the first set, 6-2, to Martinez/Espinosa of Flagler. The tandem fought back for a 6-4 win in the second frame before clinching the match with a 10-6 win in the third set super tie-breaker, 10-6.
Taking the court for the first time in the afternoon was De Fraia, who recorded a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Gilbert Rotich from host Bethune-Cookman in Singes B. Sangroniz delivered a 6-2, 6-4 win over Juan Espinal of Warner in the A flight.
The Knights continue the thee-day invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles action followed by singles play.
