Feeling It in Fifth

WILMINGTON, N.C. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 19 UCF women's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.

Sophomore Ashley Holder led the Knights with a 67 (-5) on the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Wilmington. Holder is tied for second on the individual leaderboard after day one. She carded seven birdies, the most by any player in the field.

"I felt really good on the greens today," Holder said. "I felt like every putt I stood over was going to go in. This course really fits my game well."

Senior Monifa Sealy also cracked the top ten on day one. Sealy is tied for ninth after carding a 70 (-2).

Freshman Laura Sojo shot 74 (+2) with Senior Fanny Cnops and Sophomore Ayaka Nakayama turning in matching rounds of 78 (+6) to round out the scoring for the Knights.

Head coach Emily Marron said the conditions were ideal for scoring in round one. The team is excited about its start and focused on the process.

"The girls are committed to fighting hard on every shot," Marron said. "They want to make the best of every opportunity they are given on the course."

In team competition, Purdue leads No. 11 Wake Forest by a single shot. No. 4 Duke is three shots off the pace in third with Florida in fourth, just ahead of UCF.

Second round action is scheduled to begin Saturday at 8:00 a.m. EST.
