KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UCFKnights.com) - After day one of the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the UCF women's golf team is in third place. The No. 21 Knights trail No. 33 Kent State by four shots and No. 40 Louisville by just one shot.

Seniors Fanny Cnops and Monifa Sealy led the way for the Knights, each carding rounds of 72 (+1). The pair finished tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard, just two shots off the pace.

After the opening round, the Knights lead the field on par 4's with a scoring average of 4.17. UCF also notched the most total pars with 61.

Freshman Laura Sojo and sophomore Ayaka Nakayama also turned in matching rounds, each carding a 75 (+4) for the day.

Rain earlier in the week combined with high winds challenged the entire field and kept scoring close to par. Considering the conditions, UCF head coach Emily Marron was happy with how the team played.

"Overall we are pleased with where we are," Marron explained. "If we can clean up a few mistakes we made today, we will keep ourselves in contention."

Round two action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
