JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF freshman Monica Matias captured the Singles Flight 4 title on Sunday morning at the Bedford Cup, while junior Caroline Eberhart won the Flight 1 Consolation final. Freshman Kennan Johnson recorded a runner-up finish in Flight 4.
The victory for Matias was the first fall title for the Knights as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alejandra Viadal from Bethune-Cookman. The Moca, Puerto Rico, native moved to 5-0 in singles play this fall in her first season at UCF.
Eberhart won a first-set tiebreaker and sealed the consolation title in the first flight with a 6-3 win over Spencer Liang from Florida. The Mishawaka, Ind., native fell in the opening round of the toughest flight, but rebounded to win three-straight matches in the consolation draw.
Due to the rigors of the weekend, Johnson handed the Flight 3 title to Michelle Valdez from North Florida before the match began.
As a team, UCF recorded 14 wins on the weekend during the Bedford Cup and posted wins over Florida, Florida State, Miami, Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida and Bethune-Cookman.
The Knights are back in action on Thursday at the ITA Regionals in Atlanta, Ga., where Caroline Eberhart and Cortney Cesarini are set to represent the squad.
