JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF freshmen Kennan Johnson and Monica Matias won on Saturday at the Bedford Cup to move on to the Flight 3 and 4 Finals, respectively. Two victories were also picked up by junior Caroline Eberhart to advance to the Flight 1 Consolation Final at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The morning started with pair of junior Clare Mendell and Matias dropping an 8-2 decision in the Doubles Flight 2 Final to Rebeca Pereira and Luise Intert from UNF.
Singles play began with junior Caroline Eberhart advancing to the semifinals of Flight 1 Consolation via a forfeit. She later topped Esther Zuiniga from North Florida with a 6-1, 6-4 victory to advance to the finals against Florida's Spencer Liang on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Johnson made quick work, 6-3, 6-2, of UNF's Quetvali Vazquez before notching a semifinal victory over Johnna Sterkel from Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1, 6-4. The Baton Rouge, La., native advanced to face Michelle Valdez from UNF in the Flight 3 Final on Sunday at 9 a.m.
In the same flight, a 6-4, 6-0 win was registered by Mendell in the quarterfinals over Elizabeth Means from FGCU. She ended her run for the title with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Valdez.
Flight 4 featured a 6-4, 7-5 triumph for Matias against FGCU's Alexandra Lambert. The Moca, Puerto Rico native is now set to battle Alejandra Vidal from Bethune-Cookman in the final on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Tough losses in the consolation rounds were recorded by sophomore Cortney Cesarini and junior Sofia Baptista, where both Knights won a set, but were unable to capture the decisive third stanza.
