JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - In a tournament featuring 10 teams from the Sunshine State, UCF posted three doubles and three singles victories on Friday in the Bedford Cup at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The doubles tandem of junior Clare Mendell and freshman Monica Matias advanced to the finals of Doubles Flight 2 by knocking off opponents from Florida Gulf Coast and Miami. The championship of the flight is set for Saturday at 9 a.m.
Earning a berth into the quarterfinals were junior Caroline Eberhart and freshman Kennan Johnson by knocking off Yukako Noi and Lane Rush from Florida State, 8-3, in Doubles Flight 1. The duo's run ended with an 8-3 loss to Florida's Stefani Sojick and Belinda Woolcock.
The Knights found success in Singles Flight 3 as freshman Kennan Johnson and junior Clare Mendell moved onto the quarterfinals. Johnson topped FGCU's Candela Munoz, 6-2, 6-3, while Mendell defeated Arrica Robinson from FAMU, 6-1, 6-2. Both are set for quarterfinal matches on Saturday at noon.
Freshman Monica Matias was provided a bye into the semifinal in Singles Flight 4 after her opponent dropped out of the tournament. The Moca, Puerto Rico, native faces Alexandra Landert from FGCU at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
A 6-2 first-set win was picked up by junior Sofia Baptista over Rush from Florida State. Rush came back to advance in Singles Flight 2 by closing out the match, 6-3, 6-2.
After dropping their round of 16 matches to individuals from Florida, sophomore Cortney Cesarini and Eberhart are set to battle in the Singles Fight 1 consolation bracket on Saturday beginning at 10:30 p.m. The Singles Flight 4 consolation draw includes sophomore Annika Hepp, who is set to return to the courts on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
