ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's soccer team and Ole Miss both headed into Sunday night's matchup riding three-straight shutout victories. Only one team came out with a fourth.
The Knights (7-2-0) closed out their non-conference schedule with a dominating 4-0 victory over the Rebels (6-2-2) at the UCF Soccer Complex, snapping Ole Miss' six-match unbeaten streak in the process.
Outside of giving up two goals to Minnesota, the Rebels - who are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll - had not allowed an opponent to score more than one goal this year. UCF's 4-0 victory matched the largest margin of defeat by any SEC program in 2014.
"We were coming off a big win so we knew we needed to clinch this to get back in hopefully to the Top 25," UCF midfielder Ashley Spivey said. "We just wanted to come out with some energy, and I think we've had a lot of growth as a team, and everyone is performing better individually. I think we just came out here and did it together."
Goals came quickly for the Knights in the first half. Spivey got it started after Tatiana Coleman sent her a thru ball outside of the box. She took one touch and sent it low by Ole Miss keeper Kelly McCormick in the 13th minute.
"I think once we got that goal, it kind of changed the momentum of the game. That kind of just ignited us," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "Before the game started, in the locker room we talked about respecting our opponent. We knew that they've had a successful season so far. We knew that they'd have some momentum, but we talked about playing our style, playing our game, being physical and having a lot of respect. Credit to our team, they really respected Ole Miss tonight. And I think when you respect a team, you can have results like this tonight."
Coleman also had a foot in UCF's second goal after stripping a Rebel of the ball and dribbling down the right side. She sent a cross to junior midfielder Amanda Wilkin on the far post for her third goal of the year in the 17th minute.
In the 30th minute, senior Jennifer Martin padded the score off a penalty kick after being taken down in the box for the second straight game. Although she had a rare miss by hitting the post on Friday night, she found the back of the net this time to send her team into the break with a 3-0 lead.
The Knights weren't finished just yet as Madison Cannon netted her first career goal 40 seconds after entering the match. Cannon sent a ball out of the box in the 76th minute to freshman Hannah DeBose, who crossed it back in to her teammate. Cannon spun around her defender and lifted UCF to the 4-0 win.
"I really loved Cannon's goal coming off the bench," Roberts Sahaydak said. "She works so hard at training. She did so well with the minutes we got, so we are really proud of Cannon's quick effort tonight."
UCF kicks off conference play at Memphis on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The Knights will being their quest to defend their American Athletic Conference title and aim to clinch their third-straight league title.
"Everyone is really motivated and excited to get into conference play," Roberts Sahaydak said. "We just stay the course. We don't try to look to far ahead and just focus on the details, one game at a time. Every game matters."
